Activated Protein C Resistance Testing

Activated Protein C (APC) resistance has recently been recognized as the most prevalent coagulation abnormality associated with venous thrombosis. Halbmeyer, W-M et al (1994) reported a 20-60% occurrence of APC resistance in patients with a history of venous thromboembolism.

First described by Dahlback et al (1993), APC resistance protects activated Factor V from inactivation by APC. Factor V Leiden gene mutations are responsible for over 90% of APC resistance. The testing of APC resistance, utilizing factor V deficient plasmas, constitutes an appropriate screening test for familial thrombophilia.
