Antithrombin III Testing

Antithrombin III: (produced by the liver but not Vitamin K dependent)

Function: Inhibits coagulation in the presence of natural or exogenous heparins by irreversibly binding clotting factors (IIa), IXa, X, XIa, and XIIa at their catalytic sites.

Acquired Deficiency:
·DIC
·Cirrhosis
·Nephrotic syndrome
·Medication (heparin, estrogen, or L-asparaginase)
·Pregnancy

Testing: Antithrombin III can be measured by chromogenic method (functional) or immunoassay (antigenic).
